Noon(ish): A Pipeline Tax Tale Of Promises, Estimates And Spilled Milk

The view from the Idea Center

The tales credited to the ancient Greek storyteller Aesop have lasted as long as they have because they never grow stale or musty. Today, we have a modern-day example of “The Milkmaid and Her Pail.”

NEXUS Gas Transmission, the operator of a pipeline that stretches from the natural gas fields of eastern Ohio to Michigan and beyond, said the project would bring additional property tax revenues to the communities through which the pipeline would pass.

Lorain County was counting on $9 million. County officials were hoping to pump some of that money into several school districts.

In Medina County, the Cloverleaf School District stood to make $25 million over five years, sparking dreams of new roofs and windows for its 40-year-old buildings.

NEXUS shook local officials out of their daydreaming and planning when it asked the state to reassess its public utility property tax valuation – and cut the pipeline’s taxable value by 38 percent.

Lorain County Commissioner Matt Lundy estimates four of the county’s school districts will lose between $700,000 and $600,000 each.

“We were told one thing, and now we’re being told it may end up being something else,” he told ideastream’s Taylor Haggerty.

NEXUS said $9 million was an example of what was possible not a promise of what they’d pay.

Hear that clatter and splash? That’s the sound of a lot of pails of milk falling to the ground.

See you, bright and early Monday morning on the radio,
