The view from the Idea Center
Do you still wake up at your usual workweek time, even when you're on vacation and you've turned off your alarm?
That's what happened to me during my two-week vacation. I was happy this morning to return to work. My body clock felt vindicated.
I stayed home for the most part, but I concluded my time off with a trip to Los Angeles for HostCon. It's an annual convention of "Morning Edition" hosts from around the country, and I thoroughly enjoyed it.
We met at KCRW in Santa Monica and at NPR West in Culver City. We griped about our lack of sleep, of course, but we gushed about how much we love doing live radio and bringing you the news of your community first thing in the morning.
NPR "Morning Edition" host David Greene told us how he balances his on-air duties with reporting on stories like the fire last year that destroyed Paradise, Calif. He's as nice and generous as he sounds on your radios and smart speakers.
NPR newscaster Korva Coleman revealed what she called her "analog" habit of reading her stories off of blue paper instead of a computer screen. I thought of her this morning when the studio computer froze with minutes to go before my 6:00 a.m. newscast. (I dashed to my desk, printed out my scripts with seconds to spare and did my newscast Coleman-style.)
That's how my day is starting. It will end with heavy, wind-driven snow if the forecast holds.
This week brings the start of open impeachment hearings on Capitol Hill. Here's what you need to know about this public phase of the U.S. House of Representatives' impeachment inquiry into President Trump. We'll be carrying it live on WCPN starting Wednesday morning.
Many thanks to David C. Barnett, Marlene Harris-Taylor and Rick Jackson for taking over my hosting and “Noon(ish)” duties.
See you, bright and early, tomorrow morning on the radio!

There’s a winter storm warning for Cuyahoga, Lake, Geauga and Ashtabula counties from 4 p.m. this afternoon until 10 a.m. Wednesday. Other Northeast Ohio counties like Summit, Medina and Lorain are currently under a winter weather advisory. The National Weather Service is predicting total snowfall of 6 to 12 inches. How are you preparing for the season's first major winter storm? Call us at (216) 916-6476 or comment on our Facebook page. We'll feature some of your thoughts and comments here in Noon(ish) and on Morning Edition.
Last week, we asked you about your favorite memories of Morning Edition as it celebrated 40 years on the air. Jewel Moulthrop of Cleveland Heights shared these wishes with us: "Happy birthday, Morning Edition! Don’t start your day without it."
And last week, we also talked about the hiatus for Bloom Bakery. To help us make it through, Susie Gavazzi of our Public Square Facebook group offered to bake us some cookies. She has made good on that offer, and we'll be collecting the cookies for her "favorite radio station" today. Awww...Christmas comes early to the Noon(ish) team. Thank you so much!
