The iOpener: Multiple Shootings, One Fatal; Indians Win Sixth Straight

Good morning, iOpeners. Welcome back from the long Independence Day holiday weekend. It's Monday, July 8, 2019.  

It was a violent weekend in Cleveland.  According to police, there were eight shootings in an 18-hour period Saturday night through Sunday afternoon, including a fatal shooting of a 20-year-old man. Police say officers responded to E. 93 ^rd St. and Miles Ave. on Cleveland’s East Side around 9 p.m. Saturday to find the victim lying wounded in a field. He was taken to a hospital where he was pronounced dead.   

In another shooting, two men in their 30s suffered gunshot wounds to their legs during a fight in a nightclub in downtown Cleveland.  Police say the fight escalated and two other men were stabbed, one in the arm and the other in the head. A police spokeswoman did not say the conditions of the victims or whether any arrests were made.

The parents of Otto Warmbier have filed a claim for a seized North Korean cargo ship, seeking to collect on a multimillion-dollar judgment awarded in the American college student's death. The Warmbiers, who live near Cincinnati, filed court papers Wednesday in New York federal court saying they have a right to the assets after North Korea failed to respond to a wrongful death claim accusing it of abducting their son. The Warmbiers say he was tortured after being convicted of trying to steal a propaganda poster and imprisoned for months. The 22-year-old suffered severe brain damage, but doctors were not able to determine the cause. North Korea has rejected accusations that it tortured Warmbier and said it provided him medical treatment.

The Indians have cleared Carlos Carrasco to resume strength and conditioning workouts, and “throwing activity to tolerance,” following the revelation over the weekend that the 32-year-old starting pitcher has been diagnosed with leukemia. In a statement Sunday, the team said Carrasco is being re-evaluated regularly. No timetable has been set for his return.

At Progressive Field, the MLB Futures Game during All-Star weekend ended in a 2-2 tie between the National League squad and the American League team. Los Angeles Angels outfielder Jo Adell had the best performance of the night, leading both teams by reaching base three times and scoring a run on a game-tying, two-run homer by the Texas Rangers Sam Huff in the bottom of the seventh. Huff was named Futures Game MVP. The Indians' Nolan Jones grounded out to the pitcher in his only at-bat. The home run derby is tonight at 8 and can be viewed on ESPN.  Eight stars will slug it out for a $1 million prize.

The Indians trounced the Cincinnati Reds, 11-1, for a season-high sixth straight win as they head into the All-Star break. Greg Allen homered and tripled among his career-high four hits, Jake Bauers hit a two-run homer and Tyler Naquin and Jason Kipnis added solo shots. Trevor Bauer, who is 4-0 in his last six starts, allowed a run and four hits through seven innings.

There are several weather advisories for today. The National Weather Service warns of flooding of streams and creeks in Stark County through 8 a.m. due to heavy rains last night. And it is warning of lakeshore flooding for and dangerous swimming conditions through this afternoon at Northeast Ohio beaches along Lake Erie.
