The U.S. Supreme Court’s 5-4 decision that federal courts are powerless to hear cases against extreme gerrymandering means Ohio’s gerrymandered map will remain until 2022. The high court’s ruling on cases in Maryland and North Carolina effectively ends a similar challenge in Ohio. Ohio Attorney General Dave Yost praised the ruling, noting that Ohio voters had already elected to redesign its map-drawing process. The next redistricting process will take place in 2022, after the 2020 presidential election.
Ohio House Speaker Larry Householder said he’s got a back-up plan in the event the House and Senate cannot reach agreement on a new two-year budget by Sunday’s deadline. He said a school facilities bill, Senate Bill 4, could be used to temporarily fund the government and give members of the Republican-led chambers to reach agreement on issues such as tax cuts, health care and education spending.
In another sign of funding disagreements between Ohio’s two legislative chambers, the Ohio Senate passed a budget for the Ohio Bureau of Workers’ Compensation after stripping out PTSD coverage for first responders that had been approved by the House. The Senate’s version also takes out a House-approved policy that would have required all injured workers to declare their immigration status.
Indians first baseman Carlos Santana is going to the All-Star Game for the first time in his 10-year career. He’ll start at that position for the American League in the Midsummer Classic next month in Cleveland. Santana earned the honor through fan voting in the inaugural Google MLB Starters Election.
The Akron Zoo's Pride of Africa exhibit is set to open this Saturday, nearly a month late. The exhibit was supposed to open on June 1, but the zoo's president says rain set back construction. The Pride of Africa exhibit will feature the zoo's lions. It's part of a $17 million construction project that also includes a new Wild Asia area. That exhibit is scheduled to open next year.
An air quality advisory is in effect until midnight tonight for ground-level ozone for Cuyahoga, Geauga, Lake, Lorain, Medina, Portage and Summit counties. The air will be unhealthy for children, the elderly and those with breathing difficulties. The Northeast Ohio Areawide Coordinating Agency, which issued the warning, is advising those sensitive groups to monitor their outdoor activity and check air quality readings at airnow.gov.
Indians ace Mike Clevinger returns to the mound to start a weekend series in Baltimore against the Orioles after his second stint this season on the injured list. Clevinger had sprained his left ankle June 17 during his first start since straining an upper back muscle. Orioles starter John Means is also coming back from injury. Shoulder soreness caused him to miss his last start.
