The iOpener: DeWine Steps Up State Inspections of Cuyahoga Jail; "Geauga's Child" Murderer ID'd

Gov. DeWine is ordering the state to conduct monthly inspections of the Cuyahoga County jail, threatening to take legal action if conditions and inmate treatment at the jail do not improve. He has also called for a doubling of inspectors at the Ohio Department of Rehabilitation and Correction. The governor, in announcing the increased oversight, said inspectors rated 44 of 88 full-service jails in Ohio as non-compliant with standards.

The Geauga County Sheriff's Office announced they've solved a cold case from 1993 where a newborn boy was left on the side of the road. Gail Eastwood-Ritchey of Euclid has been charged with aggravated murder. Sheriff Scott Hildenbrand said detectives tracked her down by using DNA from relatives around the world. Hildenbrand said Eastwood-Ritchey admitted to putting the baby boy, dubbed "Geagua's Child" on his cemetary headstone, in a trash bag and leaving him in a wooded area shortly after giving birth to him. He said she admitted to abandoning another newborn two years earlier, leaving the baby somewhere in Cuyahoga County.   

A Cleveland police sergeant will not face criminal charges for shooting and killing a man while working off-duty at a University Circle bowling alley in 2018. A Cuyahoga County grand jury did not indict Police Sgt. Dean Graziolli in the death of Thomas Yatsko at the Corner Alley. The special prosecutor on the case said Graziolli was working security when Yatsko and another man got into a fight and were thrown out. He said Yatsko returned and got into an argument with Graziolli, punching him several times. Witnesses said Graziolli pulled his gun and warned Yatsko to stop "but then fired twice as Yatsko moved toward him again."

Cleveland Metroparks police say the shooting deaths of a man and woman found Tuesday in the Rocky River Reservation in Fairview Park appears to be an isolated incident.  Metroparks Police Chief Katherine Dolan said the overall safety of the parks "is not in question."  They're treating the deaths of Katherine Brown of Fairview Park and Carnel Sledge of North Olmsted as a homicide.  The Cuyahoga County Medical Examiner said both victims were shot in the head.

The Minnesota Twins edged the Indians, 5-4, to avoid a sweep and prevent Cleveland from gaining more ground in the AL Central standings. The Tribe is now 10 1/2 games back of the first-place Twins. Trevor Bauer went eight innings but struggled. He allowed five runs and five hits, including three homers to Max Kepler, who entered the game hitless in his previous 21 at-bats.
