The Contenders:
- Rex, a Yorkshire terrier stolen from a Massachusetts family, was reunited with his owner 11 years later when an animal control officer found him running loose. The dog’s microchip identified the owner;
- Emergency workers in Ukraine, who rescued a cat from a bombed-out high-rise building in Borodianka, east of Kyiv. Rescue workers used an aerial ladder truck to reach the cat, who was placed in a crate and given a bowl of water;
- Kevin, the female emu who was captured more than 30 miles from home in North Carolina. When she sat down next to a father who was outside with his children, police were able to get a dog leash around her neck and lead her to a nearby fenced-in yard. Police later located the bird’s owners;
- Zeus, a 2-year-old Great Dane of Bedford, Tex., who was dubbed the tallest dog in the world by Guinness World Records at 3 feet, 5.18 inches tall.
