About NewsDepth

NewsDepth is an award-winning instructional program that uses the news to connect Ohio third through eighth graders to the Common Core. NewsDepth invites students to respond to authentic non-fiction resources, providing opportunities for writing and deeper exploration.

  • View or download each weekly NewsDepth episode on this website. Now closed captioned on television AND the web! NewsDepth is taped on Wednesdays and each new episode is posted in late afternoon or early evening.
  • Each weekly online episode includes a description of each story, featured vocabulary, links to more information, pictures and video, as well as classroom lessons and writing activities.
  • Students can participate in each episode by sending their comments to newsdepth@ideastream.org. Several are featured each week, and many more are posted on the NewsDepth Speak Out page.
  • NewsDepth utilizes the concept of "deep learning," to help students ask their own questions about the news, make new connections, and get in the flow of learning.

A 2012 survey showed that 91% of teachers agreed or strongly agreed that NewsDepth video and web-based resources contribute to their teaching; and 74% agreed or strongly agreed that NewsDepth improves their students’ academic performance.
