Advocates Want State Budget To Better Address Elder Abuse, Poverty Issues

A coalition of advocates for low-income Ohioans is worried about how lawmakers will eventually mete out money for programs that serve the state's poorest, youngest and oldest citizens. From our Statehouse Bureau Jo Ingles explains why.

Advocates for Ohio's Future, a coalition of human services organizations, wants lawmakers to increase money for things like food banks, work support programs, elder care and more.

But Senate President Keith Faber says he wants to increase tax cuts for Ohioans. And Governor Kasich has indicated he'd like to use new money from sales taxes generated through Amazon for the same purpose.

Lisa Hamler Fugitt with the Ohio Association of Second Harvest Foodbanks says she often asks people in food lines what they need in order to feed themselves.

"I've never heard one of them tell me tax cuts," Hamler Fugitt says.

The Senate's budget proposal is expected to come out Monday.
