Cleveland is one of many areas with a backlog of untested rape kits, which may contain the DNA of perpetrators. Ohio's Bureau of Criminal Investigation has been testing them.
DeWine said the state will give the county $450,000 to hire six new employees to investigate leads.
"We're determined to test every single kit, investigate every single sexual assault and resolve every case for which evidence has been collected," he said in a news conference Friday morning. "We owe the people of Cuyahoga County nothing less, and we certainly owe this to every one of the victims."
DeWine said he'll also increase the number of state agents investigating county cases from two to three. He said the state aims to have the 3,600 remaining untested kits in Ohio tested in the next 14 or 15 months.
The money comes from a pool of mortgage fraud settlement dollars.
