In 2012, Timothy Russell led Cleveland police on a car chase that lasted more than 20 minutes. The pursuit came to an end in a parking lot, when police fired 137 shots at the car, killing Russell and his passenger, Malissa Williams.
The families sued in federal court. Cleveland settled that suit this summer.
19 Action News and The Plain Dealer first reported the settlement amount of $3 million, split evenly between the two families. Sources have also now confirmed that amount to 90.3.
The settlement was approved in Cuyahoga County probate court Tuesday morning.
"It's tough for me to say whether or not that's a fair number or not, because of the nature of the case," said Paul Cristallo, an attorney for the Russell family. "The city and the parties came to an agreement fairly early on in this federal court litigation, and I think that kind of suggests everyone saw the wisdom in getting this done."
Approached last night after a council meeting, city officials declined comment.
Meanwhile, one of the officers who fired shots that night has been charged with two counts of voluntary manslaughter. He pleaded not guilty, and his case has yet to go to trial.
