Harper was the Associate Publisher and editor of the Call & Post Newspaper, a publication directed at African-American readers in the state. She developed her journalism skills in the Cleveland Public School system.
U.S. Senator Sherrod Brown says he’ll miss Harper personally. He recalls Harper’s presence, which is felt even after her passing.
“Her personality really filled the room when I’d go in and see the team of leaders at the paper," says Brown. "But I think that there are always people who step up, that’s the great thing about this country. But there’s obviously a hole in a lot of places as a result of her character and work and how we will miss it.”
The Press Club of Cleveland will induct Harper and four others into the Cleveland Journalism Hall of Fame next month. She also worked with legendary boxing promoter Don King and helped Carl Stoke’s re-election bid for Cleveland Mayor.
