Feminist activist and writer Gloria Steinem will be in Cleveland tomorrow to speak at Severance Hall.
Steinem co-founded the groundbreaking feminist publication Ms. Magazine, the National Women’s Political Caucus, and Take Our Daughters to Work Day, and has advocated for women’s reproductive rights.
She joined ideastream’s Mike McIntyre on this morning’s Sound of Ideas, and he asked her thoughts on “having it all’ – a phrase that is often applied to women who want to be wives and moms as well as professionals.
Steinem said no one can have it all, because no one can do it all.
"And that’s a phrase suspect from the beginning, because it’s only applied to the female half of the population, not the male half of the population, who also face, more and more face, these kinds of choices," Steinem said. "So, you know, the whole concept of ‘having it all’ is a way of blaming the victim, I think – and saying, you know, making people think they are supposed to have it all."
Steinem’s talk at 5 p.m. tomorrow marks the 10th anniversary of Case Western’s Flora Stone Mather Center for Women, and kicks off the new season of the Town Hall Speaker Series. Because of high demand, the event was moved from Case Western’s campus to Severance Hall.
