There were numerous activities and events around greater Cleveland today celebrating the life and legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King.
One, held at St. Vincent Charity Medical Center, featured 11th District Congresswoman Marcia Fudge, who is Ohio’s only black member of Congress.
Fudge told the audience that King should be remembered for more than his work in civil rights.
"People think King only talked about Civil Rights—that is so far from the truth," Fudge said.
"He talked about heath care, he talked about war, he talked about jobs. Dr. King was killed trying to get people better wages on jobs. It wasn’t about civil rights—it’s about human rights. It’s about decency; it’s about the ability to feel good about who you are in a country of plenty."
Fudge tied contemporary issues like health care reform, the recent violence in Arizona, and gun control to King’s teachings.
