The city of Akron today confirmed what leaders had previously hoped - that the city has been approved for a federal COPS Hiring Recovery Program grant. Akron had applied for funding of 23 new police officers under the federal stimulus program several months ago.
That will reduce the number of layoffs from the 96 cuts which were announced earlier this month.
The federal funding will maintain the 23 officers jobs for three years.
