The United Auto Workers picks General Motors as lead labor negotiator as Detroit car companies approach a new four-year contract. The union will try to work out a new contact with GM that can then be taken to rivals Ford and Chrysler. In the meantime, Ford and Chrysler agreed with the UAW to extend the current contract — which expires Friday — until a new deal can be reached.
