Addiction is defined as the continued use of a mood altering substance or behavior despite adverse consequences. It runs the gambit from alcohol and cigarettes to prescription and illegal drugs. And, the word addiction is often applied to compulsions that while not substance-related can be just as consuming, such as gambling, shopping, pornography, food, even exercise and texting. Lots of people are addicted to lots of different things. Understanding what addiction is and why it happens are the first steps on the road to recovery, a road that is often bumpy and full of detours.
Beginning in early September 2012, ideastream will present in depth, multiple media coverage that will delve into the mysterious and often misunderstood world of addiction. Stories and programs on radio, television and the web will explore:
ideastream’s multiple-media coverage of addiction is part of the on-going, award winning health information series called Be Well and is presented in collaboration with The Plain Dealer and NetWellness, a consumer information website from Ohio’s three medical research universities (University of Cincinnati, The Ohio State University and Case Western Reserve University).
Chapter 1: Introduction and Dual Diagnosis
30-year-old Brandy chronicles her experience living with drug and alcohol addiction after suffering from post-traumatic stress disorder and learn why dual diagnosis is so common among addicts.
Chapter 2: Dopamine
Travel inside the brain to examine the biology and chemistry of addiction and how it hijacks our so-called "pleasure pathway."
Chapter 3: 12 Steps
Charlene tells the story of how she got sober after 30 years of drug and alcohol addiction with the help of 12 step programs. Learn how they work and how effective they are.
Chapter 4: When Do You Have a Problem?
Pete's gambling hobby turned into a dangerous habit that cost him family, friends and his career. Hear about the key features of addiction and what to look for if you suspect you or a loved one has a problem.
Chapter 5: Relapse
Cliff was sober for 12 years before he relapsed. Find out what how and why relapse happens and what kind of treatment is available.
Chapter 6: Caregivers
Kellie shares the story of her son’s drug addiction and the toll it took on her. What do caregivers need to know to help an addict?
