In this week’s A Plus, we recognize some artistic students who used their talents to help animals in need of a home. Fourth and fifth graders at Struble Elementary School in Cincinnati created 25 paintings to donate to the PAWS Adoption Center for auction in an effort to help raise money.
Students were learning about the importance of using art to benefit others and giving back to the community through a project called “Sketch and Fetch.” They were asked to choose an animal currently living in the PAWS facility as their inspiration. Once their furry muse was selected, they were given a canvas, brightly colored acrylic paint and got to work. The outcome was impressive. A cat with purple ears wearing a yellow cardigan and a dog with plaid, heart and polka dot designs on its face were some of the creative results.
Art teacher Janne Rossman said “we’ve received so many positive responses about the student’s artwork.” Before they were available for auction, the paintings spent time on display in the shelter. The project was part of the newly-created Art Club after-school program, which aims to help students develop their artistic skills. Their proud teacher hopes it will continue on for years to come.
