The presidential candidates turn their attention to the Big Apple, as the race for delegates comes down to the final contests. From subway rides, to hitting up their old stomping grounds, White House hopefuls canvas New York ahead of the state's all-important primary coming up Tuesday, April 19th.
It's been a long few months for the candidates. Since our NewsDepth primary election a few weeks ago, Florida Senator Marco Rubio dropped out, leaving just three candidates fighting for the Republican nomination and only two for the Democratic nomination. You voted in that poll and Ohio Governor John Kasich received the victory, but he's still trailing in the race for delegates on the Republican side.
New York's primary will matter to both parties – but why should
you pay attention to the results? ideastream's Gabriel Kramer breaks it down for us.THE ROAD TO THE REPUBLICAN NOMINATION COMES TO A STOP RIGHT HERE – IN CLEVELAND, OHIO, THIS JULY … BUT IT’S STILL UNCLEAR WHO WILL BE THE FINAL CANDIDATE TO TAKE THE STAGE THIS SUMMER, ... IN THE VERY ARENA LEBRON JAMES PLAYS IN.
CONTESTS HAVE BEEN HELD IN STATES ACROSS THE COUNTRY SINCE FEBRUARY – AND IT’S CRUNCH TIME FOR CANDIDATES LOOKING TO REACH THAT SPECIAL NUMBER OF DELEGATES, TO CLINCH THE PARTY NOMINATION.
WHICH MAKES NEW YORK ALL THE MORE IMPORTANT… NINETY-FIVE DELEGATES ARE UP FOR GRABS ON THE REPUBLICAN SIDE… AND THESE DELEGATES ARE AWARDED PROPORTIONALLY, BUT THERE’S A CATCH… IF A CANDIDATE GETS OVER 50-PERCENT OF THE VOTES, THEY CAN SWEEP ‘ALL’ THE DELEGATES TO THEIR CORNER.
AND HERE’S WHY THAT MATTERS… TAKE A LOOK AT WHERE WE STAND NOW. A REPUBLICAN CANDIDATE CAN SECURE THE NOMINATION WITH 1,237 DELEGATES… ‘THAT’S’ THE SPECIAL NUMBER…
BUSINESSMAN DONALD TRUMP LEADS THE DELEGATE COUNT WITH 753… BUT HE NEEDS A BIG WIN IN HIS HOME STATE OF NEW YORK IN ORDER TO HELP REACH THAT NUMBER…
TEXAS SENATOR TED CRUZ HOLDS 545 DELEGATES AND GOVERNOR KASICH STANDS AT 143 – BOTH BEHIND TRUMP…
FOR THE DEMOCRATS, NEW YORK HAS THE NATION’S SECOND HIGHEST TOTAL OF DELEGATES AT STAKE WITH 291.
2,383 DELEGATES ARE NEEDED TO SECURE THE DEMOCRATIC NOMINATION… AND FORMER SECRETARY OF STATE HILLARY CLINTON CURRENTLY HOLDS THE LEAD WITH 1,756. BUT BERNIE SANDERS WITH 1,068 DELEGATES, HAS PICKED UP MOMENTUM - WINNING EIGHT STATES IN A ROW.
SO PAY CLOSE ATTENTION TO TUESDAY’S CONTEST IN NEW YORK – THE BIG APPLE COULD PLAY A BIG ROLE IN TURNING THESE CANDIDATES… INTO NOMINEES… ‘AND’ IMPACT WHAT GOES DOWN AT THE REPUBLICAN NATIONAL CONVENTION IN CLEVELAND THIS SUMMER.
