Goodyear Presents Spherical Tire

The tire of the future -- might look like a giant basketball!

Akron-based tire company Goodyear says it's working on a new, spherical tire designed for self-driving cars. The company presented its concept tires at the Geneva International Motor Show last week.

Goodyear says the Eagle-360 tires, which are completely round-- would be able to move in any direction and navigate tight spaces like parking spots and city traffic. In theory, the tires would connect to the car using magnetic levitation, meaning the vehicle would be suspended over the tires by magnetic field, as opposed to being mounted by an axel.

Goodyear also envisions eagle-360 tires being able to monitor road conditions and adjust the cars speed accordingly. The company admits the concept is a good ways from becoming a reality, so it's also developing a traditionally-shaped "smart" tire.
