An unexpected death sends shock waves across the nation's capital, as the Supreme Court loses one of its own. Supreme Court Justice Antonin Scalia passed away at a Texas ranch over the weekend, leaving behind a long, respected legacy of judicial service.
Justice Scalia was the longest serving Supreme Court justice. He was appointed in 1986 by President Ronald Reagan. At that time making him the first Italian-American to be seated on the high court. Before his time on the Supreme Court, Scalia spent six years with the Cleveland law firm, Jones Day. The 79-year-old was known for his "brilliant legal mind" and his energetic style. He leaves behind his wife, Maureen, nine children and 28 grandchildren.
Justice Scalia has been a part of a court that has often issued 5-4 decisions. His vacancy may mean some of the term's remaining decisions -- could be, an even split.
The Supreme Court is part of the judicial branch of government. It's made up of nine judges, called justices, who are nominated by the president and confirmed by the Senate. The Supreme Court is the highest court and has the final say on decisions of national importance.
President Obama has said he will choose a nominee to replace the late Justice Scalia after the senate returns from recess next week.
