What’s the general rule? Backpacks should weigh no more than 10% of your weight. So say you weigh 75 pounds... your backpack shouldn't weigh more than 7.5 pounds.
Researchers are still studying the long-term effects of carrying a backpack that is just too heavy, but they recommend looking for bags that are made from lightweight material and say pack the heaviest items closest to your back. And while you may think you look cool just using one strap, take the time to put both straps on. Your back will thank you for it later.
Write to us and let us know what makes your backpack heavy. We'll show some of your responses on next week's program.
