Candidates File For Fall Ballot; Inmate's Family Sues Over Execution

The teams are set – and the campaign is now definitely underway. The candidate filing deadline passed on Wednesday, and as expected, incumbent John Kasich was the only candidate to file as a Republican running for governor, along with his running mate Mary Taylor. On the Democratic side, Cuyahoga County Executive Ed FitzGerald filed with his lieutenant governor pick Sharen Neuhardt. Libertarian Charlie Earl also filed with his running mate Sherry Clark. All the other races are also set, and as in the gubernatorial race, there is a libertarian candidate in each one.

There are a lot of opinions about the execution of Dennis McGuire last month, but everyone can agree that it wasn’t a routine execution. The apparently problematic execution resulted in a lawsuit filed by the children of McGuire, who witnesses the lethal injection. Dayton-area attorney Jon Paul Rion is representing the McGuire family, and talks about the lawsuit and its potential impact.

This week, the candidates made their campaigns official, but last week, they filed their campaign finance statements for the last six months of the year. John Kasich comes into the race with a record $8 million in the bank, having raised nearly $4.5 million dollars in the last six months. Ed FitzGerald raised more than $1.6 million, and has over $1.4 million in the bank. Among the candidates for the five executive offices, Republicans outraised Democrats in the races for Secretary of State and Treasurer. But the Democratic challengers for Attorney General and Auditor outpaced the incumbent Republicans, though the Republicans still have more cash on hand. Talking about the 2014 campaigns this week are two familiar guests – Democratic strategist Sandy Theis and Republican strategist Mark Weaver.
