Gorsuch & the Future of an Independent Supreme Court

More than a year after the death of Supreme Court Justice Antonin Scalia, the United States Senate has scheduled confirmation hearings for a nominee to replace him. Republican Senate leadership had declined to move a process forward for President Barack Obama's nominee, Merrick Garland, opting to wait instead for the outcome of the 2016 election and a new administration. On January 31, President Donald J. Trump nominated Federal Judge Neil M. Gorsuch of the 10th Circuit to replace Scalia. This announcement came amidst tensions between the executive and judicial branches and after bitter feuds in the Senate over the Garland nomination and President Trump's cabinet appointments.
