Creating Schools That Meet the Needs of a Changing Society

As societies undergo demographic and economic changes, schools must play a role in providing the training and support needed for the economy and they must facilitate the integration of new immigrants so that the strains caused by social adjustment can be eased over time. Educators typically receive little guidance on what they should do during such periods of transition, and policymakers often fail to provide schools with the support they need to carry out this important work.

Drawing on research carried out in schools throughout the United States and other societies that have undergone similar transformations, Dr. Pedro Noguera, Professor of Education, NYU, will describe actions that can be taken by community leaders, educators and policymakers to insure that schools are responsive to change and can play a role in the revitalization of neighborhoods, cities and regions.
