The 2014 Anisfield-Wolf Book Awards
Dee Perry hosted the 2014 Anisfield-Wolf Book Awards at the Ohio Theatre in Playhouse Square. The awards are the oldest of their kind in the country, celebrating literary works that address issues of diversity and racial equality. The awards were established in 1935 by Cleveland poet and philanthropist Edith Anisfield-Wolf. This year's winners include Anthony Marra, author of the novel A Constellation of Vital Phenomena; Adrian Matejka's book of poetry about boxer Jack Johnson, The Big Smoke; and non-fiction honoree Ari Shavit for My Promised Land: The Triumph and Tragedy of Israel. There were also two lifetime achievement recipients, Sir Wilson Harris and George Lamming. We present some excerpts from the acceptance speeches.
The Greater Cleveland Urban Film Festival
The Greater Cleveland Urban Film Festival kicks off their third season at Shaker Square Cinemas. The organization's stated goal is to expose, educate and entertain a diverse audience through the medium of film - and it seems to be working. Last year, many of the GCUFF films played to a packed house, and this year they're hoping for a repeat performance. The person responsible for pulling it all off is Donna Dabb, the Executive Director of the Greater Cleveland Urban Film Festival.
Glass Blower Mark Sudduth
Glass blower Mark Sudduth confesses to not being much of a dancer. And yet, he finds the art of creating his large glass sculptures like a hot steamy... dance. We caught up with Mark at his studio near downtown Cleveland.
