The iOpener: One Dead, Two Injured in East Side Shooting; Body of Teen Recovered Off Huron Pier

Good morning, iOpeners. It's Monday, June 10, 2019.

A beach hazards statement goes into effect from 4 p.m. until 4 a.m. Tuesday for Cuyahoga, Lake, Lorain, Erie and Ottawa counties. The National Weather Service says there’s a high swimming risk from waves and dangerous currents.

Cleveland Police Department detectives are investigating after a fatal shooting Sunday night in Kerruish Park near Tarkington Avenue and E. 173rd St. A spokeswoman for the CPD says three people were shot. One male is deceased. No information yet on the condition of the two other victims.   

Authorities found the body of a 19-year-old man who fell into Lake Erie Saturday evening in Huron and was swept away by waves. The Huron Police identified him as Henry Stout of Reynoldsburg. Divers with Huron’s Fire Department recovered Stout’s body Sunday. An autopsy will be performed.

Longtime politician Joe Koziura returns to the post of mayor of Lorain to fill out the final six months of former Mayor Chase Ritenauer’s term. He was chosen last night by the Democratic Central Committee over two serving City Council members, Mary Springowski and Acting Mayor and Council President Joel Arrendondo. Springowski’s supporters booed upon hearing of Koziura’s appointment.  Koziura was mayor from 1996 to 1999.  He also served as a state representative for a total of nearly 20 years.  

The Cleveland Indians rallied twice to draw even with the New York Yankees in their series finale at Progressive Field, but eventually fell, 7-6 in 10 innings.  The Tribe overcame a five-run deficit and then drew even with the Yankees a second time in the bottom of the ninth after a fielding error by shortstop  Didi Gregorius allowed the tying run to score. Aaron Hicks sealed the deal for the Yankees with an RBI double off the Indians’ Oliver Perez in the top of the 10 th
