Sherwin-Williams Delaying Downtown Cleveland HQ Move
Updated: 2:39 p.m., Tuesday, Sept. 15, 2020
The coronavirus pandemic has delayed construction of the new Sherwin-Williams headquarters slated for Cleveland’s Public Square.
The company is unlikely to move to the new location until 2024, according to a Tuesday press release.
Sherwin-Williams announced in early February it planned to move to a new, Downtown Cleveland location after a nationwide search for a new headquarters site. Initial projections estimated the company would be able to move to the new facilities in late 2023.
The delay comes after Sherwin-Williams paused spending on the 1 million-square-foot facility between Saint Clair and Superior avenues in April. The delay led to the change in estimated completion dates, a company spokesperson told ideastream in an email, but planning for the new site has continued.
Sherwin-Williams is continuing work on a new research and development facility in Brecksville and project partners for the headquarters and Brecksville sites were announced Tuesday, including:
- Pickard Chilton Architects Inc.
- HGA Architects and Engineers LLC
- Vocon Partners LLC
- Welty Gilbane, a Joint Venture
- Mark G. Anderson Consultants
- CBRE Inc.
- Vorys, Sater, Seymour and Pease LLP
- Hanson Bridgett LLP
- inSITE Advisory Group
“As we move forward with the next phase of this critical project, my deepest appreciation goes to our employees who have adapted quickly and safely throughout the pandemic to meet our customers' needs in new and unique ways,” said Sherwin-Williams Chairman and CEO John G. Morikis in the release. “At the same time, we recognize that the development, engagement and sense of community our employees share has been essential to our success for more than 150 years and would be difficult to sustain over the long-term with a remote-based workforce.”
The company is expected to invest $600 million in the two projects, adding another 400 jobs to its Northeast Ohio operations
No decisions have been made regarding the company’s current headquarters and R&D center, or its Warrensville Center Road facility.
