Here's how communities across Northeast Ohio are celebrating Juneteenth

In 2020, the Cleveland NAACP and the Urban League of Greater Cleveland celebrated Juneteenth with a march through Cleveland's Buckeye-Shaker neighborhood.

This weekend, people across Northeast Ohio and the U.S. will celebrate Juneteenth, a day that commemorates the end of slavery in the U.S.

Juneteenth — a combination of June and 19th, the day it falls on — memorializes when Union soldiers in 1865 delivered word of emancipation to enslaved Black people in Galveston, Texas, following the conclusion of the Civil War. The day received designation as a federal holiday last year.

Here's a look at how some communities in Northeast Ohio are commemorating Juneteenth throughout the weekend.

A rising senior at University School in Hunting Valley, Theo works as an intern for Ideastream Public Media. At US, he serves as the co-editor in chief of the school newspaper, co-head of the organization responsible for broadcasting school sports, and prefect-elect of Hawley house.
Braedon Olsen is a high school intern from University School, where he is a rising senior. He has worked for two years with University School’s newspaper, The University School News, both as a staff writer and as an Editor-in-Chief. Braedon is also a diehard Cleveland sports fan and an avid stat junkie.
