University Hospitals Plans New Midtown Clinic

A large green field sits at the corner of Euclid Avenue and 57th Street in Midtown Cleveland.

Vacant lots and a few newly refurbished buildings that house small tech  and research outfits frame the area. The street is quiet with the occasional RTA health line bus passing by.

But sometime next year, University Hospitals will break ground on a primary care clinic to meet the demand of its growing patient population.

Jeff Epstein, director of the nonprofit collaboration that is creating the corridor, says the new building will be an anchor at the center of Cleveland's emerging Health-Tech Corridor.

"This is a huge investment in the core of the health-tech corridor by a major institutional partner, it really is going to help catalyze additional development," Epstein says.

The corridor spans from downtown to University Circle and is expected to attract a growing number of health and technology companies.

UH is tentatively planning a 30,000 to 40,000 feet outpatient clinic, which includes obstetrics and gynecology. It is planned to be two stories. The clinic is expected to serve about 47,000 patients a year, which is a 12 percent increase over the patients now seen in the same department on the hospital's main campus.

UH Spokesperson Alicia Reale says the new clinic is expected to be more accessible to a majority of the patients, many of whom live in nearby neighborhoods.
