Lorain City Schools Remain in Financial Crisis

Late last week, Lorain City Schools recalled 67 of the roughly 250 teachers laid off earlier this summer. But that didn't quell much of the frustration at last night's school board meeting.

Many speakers berated the district for cutting art classes from the elementary schools. With classroom teachers taking over arts instruction, the school day may be shortened to accommodate planning time for teachers. That upset school board member Dina Ferrer.

Dina Ferrer: And I know it's always about the money issue, but I do think that as a board, we have not really truly discussed a lot of the options.

Ferrer wondered why no one even considered cutbacks in sports. As for the teachers, the Lorain school district is using federal funds to pay the teachers it just rehired. It's also hoping to receive another grant that could return some art teachers to their classrooms. Dan Bobkoff, 90.3.
