The view from the Idea Center
“ Argyle,” the Sherwin-Williams “Color of the Year” in 2012, is getting a reprise of sorts.
The deep minty-green looks a lot like the color of a dollar bill. And the paint company stands to reap millions of them in tax breaks and other incentives as it develops its plan to build new headquarters in Cleveland and a new research and development facility in Brecksville.
There’s a lot we don’t know about those tax breaks. Local economic development officials say they’re still finalizing the details. But Cleveland Mayor Frank Jackson, in a refreshing moment of transparency, said the city’s offer is going to be big.
“This incentive package, in terms of dollar amount and in terms of duration, will be higher than I think any others that we've done [since] I've been mayor,” Jackson said yesterday.
How high? Jackson said it would be in the millions, but that’s an easy thing to say. It’s going to cost many multiples of millions for Sherwin-Williams to build a brand-new office building Downtown. But I’m guessing it won’t be nearly as much as the $489 million Jackson’s administration was prepared to give Amazon as part of Cleveland’s failed bid to snag its second headquarters and some 40,000 new jobs.
Sherwin-Williams employs 4,400 people In Northeast Ohio, which is still a significant number. The company said its new digs could lead to the hiring of 400 more.
We’ll find out soon what those jobs are worth to local economic officials.
See you bright and early Monday morning on the radio,
