Cleveland’s police chief says the manhunt now reaches across the country for Steve Stephens, the suspect in a fatal shooting that was recorded and posted on Facebook.
“Our federal partners, our local partners have reached out to their contacts all over the country, and this is what we would consider a national search,” Chief Calvin Williams said at a news conference Monday afternoon.
Stephens worked as a vocational specialist for youth and young adults at Beech Brook, a children’s behavioral health center, according to the agency.
Nancy Kortemeyer, a spokeswoman for the Pepper Pike-based center, said Stephens underwent and passed background checks before being hired.
Stephens attended Myers University, a former business school in Cleveland, according to Dawn Arrington. She previously worked for ideastream and said she graduated with Stephens in 2002.
Arrington said she recognized Stephens’ photograph on TV, and recalled him as a funny and awkward classmate.
“That person, compared to the person that I knew 15 years ago, don’t match up,” she said.
According to court records, Stephens declared bankruptcy in 2015, reporting cash advance debts to payday lenders.
Police said Stephens has traffic citations but no known criminal record.
