There are more than 400 probable cases of mumps in Ohio right now. And there are more than 230 probable cases of measles.

That’s why health officials are urging Ohioans to check their records to make sure they are vaccinated against mumps, measles and rubella with the MMR shot.

Kasich says the outbreak has reached the point of emergency. He signed an executive order allowing pharmacists to administer the MMR vaccine, so Ohioans 18 and over can get it quickly.

Right now, pharmacists in Ohio can administer a variety of other vaccines including those for influenza, pneumonia, hepatitis A and B, tetanus, diphtheria and pertussis. With this executive order, it is hoped that many pharmacies will soon start providing the MMR vaccine, too.
