WCPN Earns General Excellence Distinction At Ohio APME Event

Besides the General Excellence distinction, WCPN won five first place awards, for Best Breaking News Coverage (“After Decade of Captivity, Women Escape Home”); Extraordinary Coverage of a Scheduled Event (“Ariel Castro Sentenced”); Series (“The Working Poor”, by ideastream’s Brian Bull); Best Broadcast Writing (Michelle Kanu’s “Environmental Groups Find Middle Ground on Fracking”); and Best Use of Sound (“ER Designed for Psych Patients”, by ideastream’s Anne Glausser).

Five second place awards went to WCPN, namely for Feature (Michelle Kanu’s “School Grooms Nannies in English Tradition”); Best Broadcast Writing (“Seniors Show Their Mettle”); Best Reporter (Nick Castele); Best Enterprise Reporting (StateImpact Ohio: “Charter School a Safe Place for Gay Students”); and Best Use of Multimedia (WCPN’s website, Facebook page, and Twitter account).

ideastream reporter Brian Bull also officially received his Edward R. Murrow Award from an RTDNA board member who was present at the Ohio APME event. The regional recognition is for Bull’s five-part series, “The Working Poor”.
