Does Losing A Hub Mean Less Air Traffic?

When United Airlines announced last month that it would eliminate its regional hub at Cleveland Hopkins International Airport, officials were quick to say the move would not spell disaster for Cleveland air travelers or the region. New analysis from the Federal Reserve Bank of Cleveland appears to support that conclusion.

United's decision will reduce its departures by 60 percent, and cost nearly 500 jobs. Ideastream's Tony Ganzer spoke with a co-author of the Fed analysis, Stephan Whitaker, and asked how such losses could NOT be bad news.

Tony Ganzer has reported from Phoenix to Cairo, and was the host of 90.3's "All Things Considered." He was previously a correspondent with the Swiss Broadcasting Corporation, covering issues like Swiss banks, Parliament, and refugees. He earned an M.A. in International Relations (University of Leicester); and a B.Sc. in Journalism (University of Idaho.) He speaks German, and a bit of French.
