Testa says last year, his agency caught about $12.5 million dollars in fraudulent tax refunds before they were sent out. This year, he figures the total will be more like $15 million. Still, Testa says most of Ohio’s 5.5 million taxpayers are honest. Only about 30,000 returns are suspicious.
