C.C. Sabathia is the first Cleveland pitcher to earn the honor since Hall of Famer Gaylord Perry in 1972.
Sabathia received 19 of 28 first-place votes and finished with 119 points in the balloting by the Baseball Writers' Association of America. Boston's Josh Beckett, whose pitching propelled the Red Sox to the World Series-came in second in the Cy Young race.
Voting took place before the postseason. At a news conference, Sabathia said he was surprised he won given the competition from Beckett. Sabathia also said he's glad it worked out in his favor.
