Gathering at an east side health center just after seven this morning, organizers crossed fingers hoping for a good turnout. As the 8:00 AM step-off time approached, hundreds of black clad marchers joined in a prayer for peace.
The group then turned onto Payne Avenue toward Cleveland State University - chanting in support of the six youths charged with battery for allegedly beating a white classmate. They were originally charged with attempted murder. The beating incident reportedly occurred after prosecutors refused to charge 3 white students for hanging nooses from a tree.
The Reverend Salah Nolan said the Cleveland March is about the future of black America.
Salah Nolan: This isn't just a march for today. This is about today and our tomorrows, and the tomorrows of our children. And we can't afford to be sleeping any longer.
The march ended with a standing room only rally at a CSU Auditorium where several speakers pledged that what happened in Jena will become a catalyst for understanding, tolerance, and justice.
