This locally produced town hall special finds educators, community leaders, parents and students discussing the causes of low graduation rates within urban schools and the approaches being used to address this crisis. The conversation extends after the broadcast through online forums curated by The Civic Commons ideastream. Mike McIntyre hosts.

Ideas: The Dropout Dilemma, produced by WVIZ/PBS and 90.3 WCPN ideastream, will air on the stations simultaneously on Monday, May 19 at 9 p.m. During the hour-long “Town Hall” special, educators, community leaders, parents and students will discuss the causes of disproportionately low graduation rates within the region’s urban schools and the most promising approaches being used to address this crisis. The conversation will extend after the broadcast through forums curated by The Civic Commons ideastream, available both online and via social media.

Throughout the program, host Mike McIntyre will engage with both experts and the studio audience to explore the causes, consequences and community investment required to solve the dropout problem in Northeast Ohio. McIntyre also serves as host of The Sound of Ideas® which airs weekdays at 9 a.m. on 90.3 WCPN.

Ideas: The Dropout Dilemma airs in conjunction with the WVIZ/PBS co-production of Facing Forward: A Student’s Story which airs locally on WVIZ/PBS on Tuesday, May 13 at 9 p.m. and nationally on PBS stations beginning in May. Facing Forward: A Student’s Story journeys inside a Cleveland inner city charter school, experiencing life in and out of school through the eyes of one young student.

Ideas: The Dropout Dilemma airs as part of StateImpact Ohio: Eye on Education, an ongoing project about the state of Ohio education produced by a collaboration between 90.3 WCPN, WKSU and WOSU. It also airs as part of American Graduate: Let’s Make a Difference, a national project of The Corporation for Public Broadcasting and PBS stations across the country.

Funding for Ideas: The Dropout Dilemma is made possible in part by The Corporation for Public Broadcasting, Nord Family Foundation and Nordson Corporation. Facing Forward: A Student’s Story is made possible in part by grants from the Raskind Family Fund at the Cleveland Foundation and by the Sherwick Fund at the Cleveland Foundation.
