To date, there have been 42 collisions with ODOT snow plows since October 1st. In mid-December, there were only 13.

ODOT spokesman Steven Faulkner tells ideastream that when plowing and treating roads, these heavy vehicles travel between 30-35 miles per hour, well below most posted speed limits.

Some drivers may think tailing plows and salt trucks make for a clearer path, but ODOT advises "Don't crowd the plow". Faulkner says other drivers shouldn't tailgate or try to pass snow plows.

If a driver must pass, they are advised to take extreme caution and beware of the snow cloud.

Also drivers should slow down for oncoming snowplows, as they tend to plow far and wide.
