In Response to Welfare Bill, State Sen. Nina Turner Proposes Drug Tests for Lawmakers

Democratic Sen. Nina Turner from Cleveland wants all lawmakers in the Ohio Statehouse to be subjected to random drug tests. The measure is her response to another bill that proposes drug testing for welfare recipients.

Supporters of that bill say the screenings are in everyone’s best interest and a way to protect taxpayers’ money.

Turner says if that’s truly the motivation, then the General Assembly should also be screened, as legislators receive and appropriates tax dollars.

“So I’m not sure whether or not the General Assembly will say yea or nay to this, but it is my hope that people will see that it is patently unfair to just single out poor people," Turner said.

Turner, who’s running for secretary of state next year, says CEOs of companies receiving tax dollars should also be tested for drug use.
