A Conversation with 15 Year-old Violinist Hannah White

Hannah White, age 15, has been playing the violin seven years.  She is in her fifth year as merit scholarship recipient and member of the Music Institute of Chicago's Academy, a pre-college training program for highly gifted musicians.  Hannah has been a member of the Milwaukee Youth Symphony Orchestra String Orchestra, Philharmonia, and made the rare jump to Senior Symphony at age 11.

Hannah has performed solo with many professional orchestras including the Milwaukee Symphony Orchestra, Madison Symphony Orchestra and Sphinx Symphony Orchestra.  She will join the renowned Cleveland Orchestra for its annual Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Celebration Concert on January 16.  (The concert will broadcast live on WCLV 104.9, 90.3 HD2, at wclv.org and via free NPR Music and Tune In Radio apps.)

Hannah received the invitation to perform with The Cleveland Orchestra shortly after being named the 2015 Junior Division winner of the Sphinx Competition.  Held annually in Detroit, the Sphinx Competition offers young Black and Latino classical string players a chance to compete under the guidance of an internationally renowned panel of judges and to perform with established professional musicians in a competition setting. Its primary goals are to encourage, develop and recognize classical music talent in the Black and Latino communities.

During their conversation, Angela Mitchell will speak with Hannah about her musical studies and career opportunities that exist for young classically-trained musicians.

Join WCLV’s Angela Mitchell as she hosts a program of music and conversation with Hannah.
