Since the Industrial Revolution, the prosperity of America has depended on the strength of its manufacturing base. Manufacturing in the United States employs more than 11 million Americans and accounts for two-thirds of the nation’s exports of goods and services.

The Alliance for American Manufacturing argues that America is risking the future of its manufacturing sector and with it the economic health of the nation and the standard of living of its people. ReMaking America unveils a new story: one of hope. In the wake of an economic crisis and the worst decade for American manufacturing history, this authoritative book examines what Americans must do now to be competitive in a changing global economy. ReMaking America features original essays from renowned experts from across the political spectrum, each focusing on a different facet of the challenges facing the nation’s manufacturers. Together, they provide a blueprint of an American manufacturing resurgence.

The July 12th Friday Forum, sponsored by the Alliance for American Manufacturing to honor WIRE-Net's 25th Anniversary, will feature four ReMaking America chapter authors:

Moderated by Scott Paul, President of Alliance for American Manufacturing. His chapter, "Making Innovative Manufacturing Policy" looks at how to make American manufacturing a priority in the minds of voters and our national leaders through innovative research and effective public advocacy. He calls for manufacturing policy that shifts economic policy back to favoring domestic production to create an America that is built to last.

Dr. Irene Petrick, Penn State University Professor and Managing Director of TrendScape Innovation Group looks at "The Future of Manufacturing." She describes how new technologies and trends are transforming global manufacturing chains and how the trends will benefit local manufacturers.

Carl Pope, former Executive Director of the Sierra Club and is a veteran leader in the environmental movement. His chapter, "Energy Manufacturing: The Linchpin for America's Future," argues for more support for renewable energy technology innovation and explains precisely how this can be done.

Sridhar Kota, Professor of Mechanical Engineering at the University of Michigan and former Assistant Director for Advanced Manufacturing at the White House Office of Science and Technology Policy, has played an instrumental role in redefining the nation’s manufacturing agenda through innovative manufacturing practices and development. His chapter, "The Role of Innovation and Manufacturing R&D," explains the dangers of sending new technology production overseas and describes policy that will foster the production of new technologies in the U.S.
