100 years ago - in 1918 - Nikolai Sokoloff, the founding conductor of the then Cleveland Symphony Orchestra, ventured to the Broadway Slavic Village neighborhood of Cleveland seeking musicians for the symphony’s inaugural performance. What he found was a family of eight gifted musicians named Hruby living in the community, and four of the siblings would be a part of that first performance. In all, six members of the Hruby Family would perform with the Orchestra for more than 30 years.
Joan Katz Napoli, the Cleveland Orchestra’s Director of Education and Community Programs, and Chris Alvarado from Slavic Village Development fill us in on all of the events taking place at the 2015 Cleveland Orchestra Broadway Slavic Village Residency program.
In our ongoing series Beyond the Dish, ideastream’s Lauren Wilson stops by a popular restaurant with a promising future. Since its start, Melt Bar & Grill has grown to five locations – in part by paying homage to Cleveland’s past.
