Friends of WKSU
The Friends of WKSU, an independent 501c3, raises funds for the station that go beyond its budget operations, including underwriting, grants, and fund drives. These funds apply directly to the work of WKSU’s newsroom which fosters innovation, increases accessibility, cultivates civic dialogue, supports independent journalism, and promotes civility for the northeast Ohio region served by WKSU.
These intentions align with WKSU’s vision: to leverage its strengths as Ohio's leading public radio station by providing distinctive regional coverage with national appeal, capitalizing on WKSU's increasingly valued role as a media institution for the region.
Vision of the Friends of WKSU
The Friends of WKSU is future-oriented and focus on the state of local, state, national, and global information; democracy; and civic spirit.
Mission of the Friends of WKSU
The Friends of WKSU raises funds to strengthen the station’s impact and give WKSU additional support to achieve its mission of connecting communities with important news and information.
Projects supported to date include M.L. Schultze’s reporting on social justice and more recently, the May 4, 2020 report of the demise of newspapers, made worse by the coronavirus. Another project, Mark’s Almanac, a daily 90-second snapshot of world history that provides historical context to the surrounding news coverage, is a very popular segment that is offered during Morning Edition and 1A.
