The house at 1073 East 125 th St. in East Cleveland was purchased in May, according to police, but its new owners had not moved in yet.
On Sunday, an explosion at the house left pieces scattered all over the property and surrounding houses. One person died and another is in critical condition.
At a press conference today, East Cleveland Police Chief Michael Cardilli said the Ohio Fire Marshal’s office is investigating the explosion. Equipment arrived today to remove debris on the property so investigators can hand-sift through it.
Cardilli says the explosion caused structural damage to several nearby houses and an apartment building, which have all been evacuated. He adds, the number of neighborhood homes affected was even larger.
“It appears to be in the hundreds,” said Cardilli. “Ranging anywhere from broken windows to actual structural damage.”
One woman voluntarily turned herself in to law enforcement Sunday. Police call her a “person of interest” and say she may have information relevant to the case. She has not been charged.
Cardilli says the Salvation Army opened its doors to those displaced by the explosion and clean-up of the site should be complete by Thursday.
