Mayor Frank Jackson enters the final stretch of the mayoral election with more than twice as much money as his opponent, Councilman Zack Reed. Both candidates have spent most of the money they’ve raised this year.
Reed brought in more contributions than in the previous reporting period, which was before the councilman finished second in the primary. Jackson still out-raised him more than two-to-one in this latest reporting period.
Jackson reported a balance on hand of about $83,549, while Reed reported $34,458, according to the unaudited campaign finance reports disclosed Thursday.
The reports cover fundraising and spending from the last week of August through the middle of October.
During the latest reporting period, Jackson brought in $334,690 and spent nearly half a million dollars. Reed received $136,650 in contributions, spending $111,322.
Both campaigns have bought radio and TV ad time, according to broadcast station disclosures with the Federal Communications Commission.
Cleveland Forward, a super PAC behind an ad criticizing Reed, has also bought TV and radio time. SEIU 1199 plans to run independent canvassing and phone bank operations in support of Reed, a union leader told Cleveland.com.
