The candidates vying to be the next mayor of Akron meet for a debate tonight. A group of Akron pastors is convening tonight’s event, held at the Akron Urban League.
Three men are in the running for the city’s top job. City Councilman Michael Williams and Summit County Clerk of Courts Daniel Horrigan are competing for the Democratic nomination. Their race will be decided in a primary Sept. 8. There’s one candidate on the Republican side: attorney Eddie Sipplen.
There will be another debate for the Democrats at the Press Club of Akron later this week.
The city has had three mayors in the span of just a few weeks this year. Don Plusquellic resigned in May after nearly three decades at City Hall. Council president Garry Moneypenny succeeded him, but stepped down soon after, saying he’d had what he called a "too-personal encounter" with a staff member.
Councilman Jeff Fusco is now serving as mayor—he’s not in the running to keep the job long term.
