Moving tens of thousands of visitors around the city is a big enough challenge for transportation planners. Heavy security will complicate the picture.
Planning will require a lot of forethought and coordination with the Secret Service. RTA chief Joe Calabrese, who is overseeing transportation planning for the convention, says that will get going this spring.
"We’re really waiting to work with them to find out what restrictions or requirements they may have," he said.
National and local Republicans, police, and state transportation officials will also take part in the planning process.
Along with all the visitors trying to get around an unfamiliar city, Calabrese says a lot of private bus drivers will also be out-of-towners. He says training them on routes and communicating effectively will be crucial.
