Cain Park Evans Amphitheater
Intersection of Lee Road and Superior Road in Cleveland Heights
A highlight of the Cain Park Evans Amphitheater summer season is the annual Inlet Dance Theatre performance. Returning for its fourteenth year, Inlet Dance Theatre is delighted to present a dynamic program showcasing professional and pre-professional dancers alongside students from its Summer Dance Intensive (SDI) – a multi-week instructional camp for dancers of all ages and experience levels. “We are thrilled to be able to continue our tradition of offering free Kids Matinee and evening concert performances at Cain Park Evans Amphitheater,” commented Inlet Founder and Executive/Artistic Director Bill Wade. “Over the years, we have received feedback that this concert is an annual summer highlight for many. We’ve heard that summer camps plan their days around it…people reschedule vacations because of it…and we couldn’t be more delighted for the impact we have on our community. This year, the caliber of students participating in the SDI is incredibly committed and diverse. They cannot wait to demonstrate their talents to the entire community.”
In the evening performance, you will see distilled examples of Inlet’s work with the SDI 14 students in new works choreographed Company Members Joshua Brown, Dominic Moore-Dunson, and Nicole O’Malley. Additionally, the entire ensemble will perform a remounting of the comedic Amusette, poking fun at classist mentalities found in the dance and other subcultures. We will share the world of modern dance technique, whimsical moments of spontaneity, and gender specific works, explorations of life issues, mixed with works performed by the Inlet company members themselves—the “stuff” of the contemporary dance world.
Highlighted works from the professional Inlet company repertory include: Ascension – a work that centers on the idea that human beings ascend to higher places when their relationships are respect based, balanced, and trust filled. It is the sharing of new paradigms (new ways of moving) that transforms communities; War Effort Eves – created in response to 9/11, this work showcases the three archetypes of American women during WWII; and A Close Shave – inspired by the book, Man in the Mirror, by Patrick Morley, this audience favorite centers on the idea of a man confronting and wrestling with the proverbial man staring back at him every morning when he shaves.
Inlet’s Summer Dance Intensive performance at Cain Park is perhaps the most comprehensive single representation of the company’s mission of “using dance to further people”. Students of various ages, races, backgrounds and skill sets travel as individuals to Cleveland from international, regional, and local hometowns to learn about Inlet’s brand of dance. However, in the process of preparing for the Cain Park performance, students engaged in the four creative practices of imagination, investigation, construction, and reflection. These creative practices nurture the effective work habits of curiosity, creativity and innovation, critical thinking and problem solving, communication, and collaboration—each necessary aspects for successful living in the 21st Century. Inlet company member performances further demonstrate to students and audience members the dedication and talents required to choose dance as a profession and how the art of dance is used to speak creatively about life and issues we all face.
